Bohn Evaporator Coils vs. Bohn Condensing Units: A Practical Buyer's Guide

If you are trying to figure out whether you need Bohn evaporator coils or Bohn condensing units, there is a good chance a walk-in cooler or freezer is already giving you trouble. The natural urge is to search for a part number and place an order fast. That works sometimes, but it fails whenever the real problem is a mismatched system, not a single broken component.

I manage purchasing for a regional food distributor. I am not a refrigeration engineer. My job is to take a maintenance report, check the supplier quote, and make sure the PO matches the equipment that is actually installed. I have made enough ordering mistakes to be a believer in checklists.

Know Which of These Three Scenarios You Are In

The best way to avoid a wrong order is to ask one question before looking at parts: What is the existing setup? Usually you fit one of these three situations:

  • Scenario A: You have a walk-in cooler/freezer and the existing evaporator coil is leaking, damaged, or otherwise needs replacement.
  • Scenario B: You are building a new refrigerated space, expanding one, or replacing an entire system from scratch, so you need a condensing unit and evaporator coil that are designed to work together.
  • Scenario C: The condensing unit or compressor is the problem, but the indoor evaporator coil is still there and might be salvageable.

I used to think the search term told me the answer. If someone searched for a Bohn evaporator coil, I looked for a Bohn evaporator coil. If they searched for Bohn condensing units, I looked for a condensing unit. After a few returns, I learned that the data tag is more important than the search term.

Scenario A: Replacing a Bohn Evaporator Coil in an Existing Cold Room

This is the most common replacement request we get. The walk-in exists, the condensing unit outside is still operating, and the technician finds the problem inside on the evaporator coil. Typical signs are a refrigerant leak, ice buildup that defrost does not fix, or coil damage from a forklift or door contact.

In my first year, I made the classic beginner mistake. A technician gave me a model number from an old invoice and told me it was the coil we needed. I approved the purchase. The number was for a discontinued version. The replacement had a different drain orientation, so we paid for expedited shipping, sent the first unit back, and waited for another delivery. It cost us extra downtime and a restocking fee. I want to say the fee was about 20 percent, but I may be misremembering.

That is why my current rule is simple: get a nameplate photo before you allow any quote. The model number alone is not enough. Check the voltage, phase, defrost type, drain connection location, and clearance. If the product line has been superseded, ask for the current drop-in from the manufacturer's literature instead of guessing by looks.

  • Nameplate model number and serial number
  • Voltage, phase, and frequency
  • Defrost type: off-cycle, electric, or hot-gas
  • Which refrigerant is in the existing system
  • Orientation of the refrigerant connections and drain pan

Why does this level of detail matter? Because model nomenclature changes. One letter in a Bohn model line can stand for a different defrost heater wattage or a different connection kit. A distributor who sells you the right brand but the wrong version is still selling you the wrong part.

Ask for the Bohn product data sheet and the installation and operation manual before you finalize. The IOM contains the wiring diagram reference and clearance notes. The data sheet contains the rated capacity at specified conditions. If a quote does not name those conditions, the BTU number is not comparable.

Scenario B: Buying Bohn Condensing Units and Evaporator Coils for a New or Rebuilt Box

Scenario B is for a new installation or a full system replacement. No existing coil is waiting to be matched, so the evaporator and condensing unit have to be selected as one design.

Here is the part that surprises people: do not start with horsepower. Look, a three-horsepower condensing unit is not a complete specification. Its capacity changes based on the evaporator temperature and the condensing temperature. An evaporator coil's capacity also changes with temperature difference and airflow. Two systems can look identical on paper and perform very differently if they are rated under different conditions.

What I ask for when we need a Bohn system for a new room:

  1. The design box temperature: 35°F cooler, 0°F freezer, -10°F freezer, or another target.
  2. A heat load that includes product load, traffic, lights, insulation, and any pull-down requirement.
  3. Where the condensing unit will sit and the maximum summer ambient temperature it will see.
  4. Total equivalent line length and vertical distance between the condensing unit and evaporator.

If the supplier does not ask for most of those, treat it as a red flag. Refrigeration is engineered, not assembled from matching pictures. Bohn publishes selection data so a qualified contractor or distributor can make that match correctly.

I also want to push back on a common instinct. Bigger is not safer. I understand why people oversize; a larger system feels like extra protection. But an oversized condensing unit can short-cycle on a small load, and oil return problems tend to follow. If the box load was calculated, stick with the calculated selection unless someone can show a real reason to change it.

For a freezer, confirm the defrost method during the design stage. In most commercial freezer applications, that means electric or hot-gas defrost, not just off-cycle. Each coil has a recommended defrost heater capacity, and the full model nomenclature is what tells you which heater is installed.

Scenario C: Replacing Just the Bohn Condensing Unit and Keeping the Old Evaporator Coil

This one is usually a budget-driven repair, and I understand the appeal. The indoor coil sits in a cold room, so it often looks newer than the condensing unit outside. Sometimes you can reuse it. But you can only know that after checking compatibility.

When a condensing unit failed at our facility in 2024, the coil looked fine. The technician agreed. We approved the replacement and learned after startup that the coil was physically okay but the expansion valve and controls were set up for the old refrigerant. We had to schedule another visit to replace the valve and repeat part of the commissioning work. It was not a disaster, but it was an expensive annoyance. Looking back, I should have asked about refrigerant and valve compatibility before signing the PO. At the time, I just wanted the freezer back online.

When you replace a condensing unit on an older system, ask:

  • Does the existing evaporator coil have an expansion valve for the new refrigerant?
  • Does the coil defrost system work with the controls on the new condensing unit?
  • Will the existing line sets be flushed or replaced?
  • Does the manufacturer have a reference for the proposed coil and condensing unit combination?

If you are moving from R-22 to a newer refrigerant, do not assume the existing components are compatible. The coil material may be fine, but the valves, controls, oil, and filter-drier are not afterthoughts.

In the U.S., technicians who open a sealed refrigeration circuit must be EPA Section 608 certified and must recover refrigerant instead of venting it. I mention this because an emergency repair quote that treats recovery as optional is a red flag.

How to Tell Which Scenario You Are In

If you are still unsure, work through this branch logic:

  • Do you already have the refrigerated box? If no, start with Scenario B. If yes, continue.
  • Is the problem isolated to the evaporator side, like coil damage, defrost failure, or ice buildup? Start with Scenario A and confirm the condensing unit is still in good shape.
  • Is the condensing unit short-cycling, not starting, or tripping on high pressure? Start with Scenario C. Do not replace the coil just because it looks old.
  • If both the coil and the condensing unit are old, do not force a half repair. A matched Bohn evaporator and condensing unit package is often less expensive than paying for two partial fixes.

The best time to check specifications is before you ask for pricing. Five minutes can feel like an hour when a freezer is down, but the wrong purchase order costs more than five minutes.

Write down the complete model numbers from both nameplates, take photos of them, and send those to the Bohn distributor before approving the purchase.

The Bohn name is common in commercial refrigeration for good reasons, but the brand only helps when the selection is correct. Start with your actual scenario, use the published data, and treat the checklist as part of the purchase. It is the cheapest component in the system.
