A Small Order, A Big Lesson: Sourcing EC Fans for a Data Center Cooling Project

It started with a phone call I almost didn't take

In March 2024, I got a call from a small engineering firm—two guys, a van, and a contract to retrofit a server room for a local data center. They needed 20 EC fans for data center cooling. Not 200. Not 2,000. Twenty. My first thought, honestly? This is gonna be a waste of time. I'm the quality and brand compliance manager at bohn. The vendor claimed it was 'within industry standard.' Dave didn't know enough to argue. That's when he called us.

I went back and forth between two options for him: stick with backward curved fans (efficient, quiet, good for clean environments) or switch to radial flow fans (higher pressure, more robust, but noisier). Six months later, Dave's firm won a contract to retrofit three more data centers. He ordered 150 EC fans. Then 300. Last month, he placed an order for 500 units, including a mix of backward curved fans and radial flow fans for different zones.

There's something satisfying about that. After the frustration of dealing with the flaky vendor, finally finding a plug fan manufacturer who cares about small orders—and a client who remembers who helped him when he was small.

What I learned (and what you can steal)

  • Small doesn't mean unimportant—it means potential. That 20-fan order turned into a 500-unit relationship.
  • Specs aren't suggestions. Always measure. If the airflow is off by more than 5%, reject it. Don't let a vendor tell you it's 'close enough.'
  • Don't ignore the fan type. Backward curved, backward blade, radial flow—each has a place. For data centers, EC fans are usually the best bet for efficiency and control. DC fans work for simpler setups.
  • Ask for a sample or a blind test. It sounds old-school, but it works. A $45 difference per fan is nothing compared to a failed project.

I wish I had tracked customer feedback more carefully from the start. What I can say anecdotally is that the small orders we treated well in 2022 are now our fastest-growing accounts. According to our internal data (Q1 2024 audit), 30% of our repeat business comes from clients who started with orders under 50 units.

So if you're a small engineering firm or a startup, don't let anyone tell you your order is too small. And if you're a supplier, remember: today's 20-fan order is tomorrow's 500-fan contract. Treat it that way.
