Bohn Walk-In Cooler Not Cold? Three Cases That Look the Same But Need Different Fixes

I keep a repair notebook because I've made too many expensive guesses. In 2017, my first year handling refrigeration parts, I ordered a Bohn evaporator coil for a walk-in cooler after seeing frost on the coil. The customer was frustrated, the box was hovering around 45 degrees, and I was convinced the coil was failing. It wasn't. A torn door gasket and a defrost clock that ended the cycle too early were the real problems. That mistake cost me about $1,100 and a little of the customer's trust.

If you're dealing with a Bohn walk-in cooler that won't stay cold, there is no single universal fix. I know that sounds like a consultant answer, but it's true. In my notes, these problems split into three common cases. They can all show up with the same warm box and long-running compressor, but each case needs a different starting point.

1. Frost on the evaporator coil while the box runs warm

Frost or ice on a Bohn evaporator coil gets blamed on low refrigerant or a bad expansion valve more often than almost anything else. I made that mistake early. Frost tells you about moisture, airflow, and defrost behavior—not always about the coil itself.

Before you buy a new Bohn evaporator coil, check the basics:

  • Door gaskets. A soft or torn gasket lets humid air in, and that moisture freezes on the coldest surface, which is usually the coil.
  • Defrost schedule. If the defrost cycle ends too early or the heater never comes on, frost builds slowly and looks like a refrigeration fault.
  • Evaporator fan operation. If one fan is dead or a blade is blocked, airflow drops and the coil can freeze unevenly.

I remember a walk-in freezer where the old coil looked like a block of ice. I was ready to replace it. Then we found that the return air path was blocked by stacked boxes. The coil was doing its job; it just wasn't getting enough air. Once we cleared the airflow, the frost pattern went back to normal. The Bohn evaporator coil was fine.

That doesn't mean Bohn evaporator coils never fail. If you do need a replacement, use the model number and select a coil rated for the actual box temperature and refrigerant. According to Bohn product literature, evaporator selection depends on room temperature, load, and refrigerant. A coil that fits the same hanger pattern may still be wrong for your application.

2. The condenser is hot, the compressor is cycling, and the cooler can't keep up

There's another failure mode that looks like a dead evaporator but actually lives on the hot side of the system. The box isn't cold, the condensing unit is running overtime, and the compressor keeps tripping on high pressure. When I see that, I now look at the condenser coil first.

In July 2022, I thought I had a bad condenser fan motor. The motor looked burned, so I replaced it on a Friday afternoon. Monday morning, the owner called back. The unit tripped again. When I opened the panel, the coil was packed with seed fluff and dust from a tree near the roof. The dirty coil was the real cause. Replacing the motor was necessary, but cleaning the coil was the actual repair. I should have spent twenty minutes with a flashlight before ordering that motor.

How to use an air compressor for condenser coil cleaning without ruining the fins

You can absolutely use an air compressor to clean a condenser coil. I do. But a high-pressure compressor can flatten aluminum fins faster than it cleans them. Here's the process I use now.

  1. Disconnect power to the condensing unit before you touch anything.
  2. Put a moisture separator and pressure regulator on the air line. Air from a job-site compressor is rarely clean and dry unless you filter it.
  3. Keep the pressure fairly low, around 25 to 30 psi, and stand back from the fin surface. You want to move debris, not bend fins.
  4. Blow in the direction the debris came from. If you push it deeper into the coil, you'll make the blockage worse.
  5. Use a fin comb after blowing if you notice bent fins.

One thing I've seen people try is putting a misting fan next to the condenser to bring the air temperature down. A misting fan can buy a few degrees of head pressure during extreme heat, and I'm not against it in the right setup. But it doesn't clean the coil. If the mist contains hard tap water, minerals build up on the fins and turn into a crust that air blowing won't remove. In one ice cream store, that crust was so bad by the second summer that the condenser needed chemical cleaning. If you do consider a misting fan, treat the water and clean the coil first. Otherwise, you're adding a maintenance problem on top of an airflow problem.

3. The real problem is storage format, not the evaporator

This third situation took me the longest to learn. Sometimes the Bohn walk-in cooler isn't broken—it's being asked to do something that no standard evaporator coil can fix.

In 2020, a restaurant called me about a walk-in freezer that couldn't hold temperature. The unit was running, the evaporator coil was clean, and the refrigerant charge looked okay. But the freezer was packed floor-to-ceiling with frozen bags. Air was barely moving past the coil. The fix wasn't a bigger unit. We moved the overflow into a commercial freezer chest and rearranged the racks so airflow had a path. The walk-in freezer pulled down to temperature that same evening.

When a freezer chest makes more sense than another evaporator coil

A freezer chest isn't a replacement for a real walk-in freezer, but it's a practical tool when you have short-term overflow or low-access storage. If staff need to pull product constantly, a chest freezer becomes a bending-and-digging problem. In that case, a properly sized Bohn evaporator coil in a walk-in freezer is the better answer.

But if the issue is that your cold room is overloaded, adding more refrigeration won't solve it. It just makes the compressor run on a coil that's fighting poor airflow and excessive door openings. In many cases, a commercial freezer chest gives you extra capacity without the cost and downtime of installing another evaporator.

How to decide which situation you're in

Before you order a Bohn evaporator coil or schedule a refrigerant repair, do this quick check:

  1. Look at the evaporator coil. Is it frosted evenly, blocked with ice in one section, or physically damaged?
  2. Look at the condenser coil. Is it dirty, covered with lint, or blocked by vegetation or packaging?
  3. Look at the room. Is there airflow around the coil, or is product stored too close? Are doors being left open?
  4. Log the temperature for 24 hours. A simple temperature logger and a few notes about door openings will tell you more than a quick pressure reading.

I'm not saying you should never replace a Bohn evaporator coil. Some coils leak, some are damaged by ice, and some simply reach the end of their life. But every time I've skipped the basic checks and jumped to a part replacement, I've ended up with a bigger bill and a repeat call.

Bottom line: a warm Bohn walk-in cooler is usually a symptom, not the disease. The Bohn evaporator coil can look guilty when the real culprit is humid air, poor condenser airflow, or a storage habit that no evaporator can keep up with. Check all three before you spend the money. I say this as someone who paid the stupid tax more than once so you don't have to.
