Bohn Condensing Unit Coil Cleaning: DIY Leaf Blower vs. Calling a Pro

If you search how to clean condenser coils, the internet will show you two options: spray the coil from the outside and act like you saved the day, or call a refrigeration technician and pay for something you cannot see. Neither version tells the whole story. I manage maintenance budgets for a food distributor. I have been managing repair POs for the refrigeration outfits that service our Bohn compressor and Bohn condensing unit for the last six years. This article is not another generic tutorial. It is a cost comparison between using a backpack leaf blower to clean the condenser coil on a Bohn refrigeration setup and paying a pro to do it properly.

Why I keep coming back to a backpack leaf blower

There is a specific reason I have a soft spot for the leaf blower method. It costs almost nothing. We already own a gas backpack leaf blower for the receiving dock. When I use it on an outside condenser, I pull the disconnect, remove the panels, and blow from the inside out. It clears cottonwood seeds, dead leaves, and the layer of general dust that builds up between the fins. If the Bohn condensing unit sits in a mostly clean area, a thorough once-over every 90 days is enough to keep the condenser from working too hard.

But calling this cleaning is generous. It is surface cleaning. It does not resolve oil film, baked-on grease, or the gray coating that forms near a kitchen exhaust or an asphalt lot. In those cases, a backpack leaf blower is the equivalent of brushing food crumbs off the kitchen floor and calling the floor clean. The Bohn compressor still runs with high head pressure because the heat transfer surface is blocked, even if the fins look open from the outside.

For routine service on our 7.5-horsepower Bohn condensing unit, the last professional coil cleaning quote was $385 in January 2025. Maybe $390, I would have to check the actual repair invoice. That quote included the service call, coil cleaner, rinse, and fin straightening. It did not include electrical parts. A second vendor quoted $580 because they wanted to add a foaming cleaner and a full condenser fan service.

The DIY method with a backpack leaf blower has a marginal cost near zero if you already own one. The blower cost about $240 when we bought it in 2022, and we use it for more than coil cleaning. If you are purchasing one just for this, a residential backpack leaf blower in 2025 runs around $200 to $350. That is not a huge number, but it is also not the real comparison.

The real comparison is what happens after a DIY cleaning does not solve the problem. Last summer, I skipped the pro cleaning on one unit and spent two hours blowing it out myself. The condenser looked cleaner. The unit still ran warm. For Bohn equipment, that is important because the coil fins are thin. If someone hits them with a pressure washer, the fins bend and the coil is ruined. That was true 20 years ago when coil spacing was wider, and it is still true today.

On the professional side, the service usually includes a low-pressure water rinse, a mild alkaline coil cleaner, dwell time, another rinse, and fin combing. That method removes the film that a leaf blower cannot touch. It also gives the technician a chance to inspect the Bohn condensing unit model number, refrigerant pressures, and compressor amps before there is a catastrophic failure.

For routine dust, I honestly believe a backpack leaf blower is enough. For a Bohn compressor that is already cycling on high head pressure or short cycling, the first move should be a professional coil cleaning with a follow-up check of the full refrigeration circuit. That might seem like overkill, but the compressor is far more expensive to replace.

One mistake I had to fix in our own building

During a cold spell, someone on our crew placed a Lasko heater under the Bohn condensing unit to keep the drain pan from freezing. He meant well. The heater kept the pan warm, but it also made the condenser fan pull in air that was already heated. That defeats the entire purpose of a condenser. We moved the heater to the doorway instead. If you have a space heater near a condenser coil intake, move it. Heat near the intake makes the Bohn compressor work harder and pulls more dust through the coil.

Risk comparison: where the hidden costs live

The biggest hidden cost with a backpack leaf blower is not the machine. It is the false sense of completion. You look at the condenser, see bright metal, and close the panel. Meanwhile the dust deeper in the coil is still stuck to the fins. The coil is dirty in the last inch of depth where airflow moves through. Because the outside row looks clean, no one measures the temperature difference across the coil.

The biggest hidden cost with a professional is trying to hire the cheapest available technician. We have learned that the price of the service call matters less than whether the tech carries a manifold gauge set and is willing to measure compressor amps. The last time we thought the Bohn compressor was on its way out, the actual issue was a failed start capacitor and a dirty coil. A cheaper cleaner without diagnostic tools would have sold us a compressor replacement.

So the risk comparison has a strange conclusion: the leaf blower is a maintenance tool, not a repair tool. It keeps a healthy system healthy. When the Bohn system is already showing symptoms, professional cleaning is the lower-risk option because it comes with diagnosis.

Time certainty is part of the cost

I do not automatically choose the cheaper route when a unit is down. The reason is simple: missing a cold storage deadline costs more than a rush charge. Last August, one of our Bohn condensing units lost cooling during a heat wave. We had two vendors available. One said they could come in four days for $420. Another could get a tech to us the next morning for $640. The lower quote was about 35% lower, but the product inside that cooler represented roughly $12,000 of inventory. Waiting four days was not a real option.

I paid the $640. That extra $220 was not for speed alone. It was for certainty. The tech arrived at 7 a.m., found a dirty condenser coil and a failing fan motor, and had the unit back down to temperature by 10 a.m. The cheaper vendor might have done a fine job if we had four days. But in that situation, uncertain but cheap is more expensive than certain but not cheap. That is a conclusion I have reached after six years of signing repair POs.

What I would do with a Bohn compressor or condensing unit

If the condenser coil is only dusty and the system is running well, use a backpack leaf blower every few months. That is real preventive work. Do not pressure wash, do not bend fins, and do not add heat with a space heater nearby.

If the coil has a film that does not blow off, or if the compressor head pressure is above its normal range, schedule a professional coil cleaning. Ask the tech to log the Bohn condensing unit model and the compressor amp draw before and after the service. That gives you a baseline for the next time.

If the equipment is down and product is at risk, pay for the vendor who can commit to a firm arrival window. That is not a luxury. It is the same logic as buying a spare fan motor before the warehouse demands one. The clean coil, the right technician, and a definite arrival time are all part of the same cost: keeping the cold chain intact.

That has been my experience managing a food distribution maintenance budget. Your facility may have a different setup, so your price and cleaning schedule should be adjusted accordingly. But the principle is hard to argue with: the first question is not whether the leaf blower method is cheaper. The first question is whether it can actually solve the problem before the Bohn compressor makes the decision for you.
