When I took over purchasing for our company's three cold-storage facilities in 2020, I was convinced — like a lot of administrators probably are — that a Bohn evaporator coil is just a coil. A hunk of copper and aluminum. Whoever makes it cheapest, wins.

That was a $6,700 lesson I won't repeat.

I'm not a refrigeration technician, so I can't speak to the thermodynamics of fin spacing or the metallurgy of the tubing. What I can tell you, from a procurement perspective, is that the cost of getting it wrong is almost never the part itself. It's the downtime, the emergency service call, the lost product, and the invoice that finance rejects because the paperwork is handwritten.

After processing somewhere around 80 parts orders annually across three vendors, I've landed on a pretty strong opinion: paying for genuine Bohn refrigeration parts — even when they cost more upfront — saves real money.

The Wrong Coil Cost Us a Weekend and a Pallet of Meat

I'm not saying you should never price-shop. I am saying that refrigeration parts are not a commodity. You don't buy a Bohn evaporator coil the same way you buy copy paper. The consequences of a bad part — the downtime, the waste, the emergency calls — are orders of magnitude larger than the 20% you saved on the component.

Honestly, I'm still surprised there isn't more industry standardization around parts quality documentation. But that's a conversation for another day. For now, I'll stick with genuine Bohn for mission-critical components, and I'll sleep better knowing my coolers are holding temperature and my expense reports won't get flagged.
