A used tractor only looks cheap until the first repair bill. I'm not saying buy new—most farmers don't. But spend a couple of hours inspecting before you spend thousands, no matter how clean the paint is.
Check the expensive things: front axle/kingpins on a 4WD, hydraulic hoses and fittings, fuel system, PTO splines, and transmission oil for 'glitter.' Glitter is metal floating around, and metal floating around means a rebuild. Start it cold. Walk behind it and look for leaks. Run every remote at the same time. Actually, run them under load—that's where weak pumps show up.
In March 2024, a customer brought in a tractor he'd bought at auction for $18,500. Sounded fine at idle. Then we put it on a loader and opened the rear remotes: 800 psi instead of 2,500. He ended up spending $7,200 on hydraulics before spring. A $250 hydraulic test would've told him to walk away. That's the definition of paying more to save less.

The biggest mistake I see is buying too small because it fits the budget today. A compact tractor can run a 5-foot rototiller, but it'll struggle with an 8-foot soil tiller or a 3-point backhoe. Horsepower matters, and so does hydraulic flow—that's the spec that never gets compared.
Also, get one with ROPS and a seatbelt, even if you're only on flat ground. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH/CDC), ROPS reduce tractor rollover deaths by about 70%. That's not a comfort feature; it's the difference between a bad day and a funeral.

When does a towable backhoe make more sense than a mini excavator?
If you need to dig trenches, grub out stumps, or repair field tile, a towable backhoe is a solid middle ground. It's a trailer-mounted unit you pull with a truck or tractor, so you don't have to dedicate a trailer to it the way you would with a compact excavator. We've used one on emergency drainage jobs when the rental excavator couldn't arrive for two weeks.
The other advantage is cost. A new towable backhoe costs a fraction of a mini excavator, and it doesn't have the same depreciation hit if it sits in a shed for eight months. But be honest about your usage. A 12-inch boom on a towable unit isn't going to dig like a 7-ton excavator, and the hydraulics are slower. It's a utility tool, not an earthmover.
Check your tow vehicle capacity, too. Many units weigh over 3,000 pounds before you add a bucket. And before you buy, check parts availability. If the dealer says 'four to six weeks' for a common part, walk away. When it breaks at planting time, that's just a long wait for a paperweight.

You'd think a manual seed planter is too old-school, but it's honestly the right tool for the right job. It's cheap, light, and dead simple. There's no battery, no hydraulic hose, no calibration chart to lose. For a vegetable garden, a small orchard, or reseeding a food plot, it's hard to beat.
The problem is scale. Buy a manual unit for a 40-acre field and you'll hate yourself by the end of the first row. It's the classic penny-wise, pound-foolish mistake. We saw a local farmer try to save $800 by going manual, then buy an automatic planter three weeks later because the hand-pushed seeder was eating whole days.
Bottom line: use a manual seed planter when you can park it in 10 minutes and finish the job before lunch. If it's going to take more than half a day, spend the extra money and save your back.
How often should a soil tiller machine be serviced?
At least once a year, before the season starts. Our shop rule is a 30-minute pre-season service: gearbox oil, blade bolts, PTO shaft U-joints, and belt/shield condition. If the machine sat in a shed all winter, give it an extra 15 minutes to deal with the mice and the rusted tines.
This is one of those places where prevention beats everything. A blade bolt that shears off can take the gearbox seal with it, and then you're not replacing a bolt—you're replacing a gearbox. A dry U-joint locks up mid-field, and a $20 grease gun trip turns into a $400 driveshaft.
I made a 12-point checklist after we had three tiller breakdowns in one season back in 2019. That checklist has saved our customers—and our shop—an enormous stack of repair bills. Five minutes of greasing, every spring. That's it.
