The $75 savings that costs $1,200
I run a blind test with my team every fall: same Bohn refrigerated unit, same airflow requirements, two motors. One is a genuine Bohn 115V 3-speed blower motor. The other is a no-name equivalent at roughly half the price. The cost difference averages $75 per motor. On a 50,000-unit annual order, that would be tempting—but this is about replacement parts, not mass production.
What we found: after 18 months of simulated run cycles, the aftermarket motor had a failure rate of 4.2%, compared to 1.1% for the genuine Bohn part. That's from our internal test records, based on 200 units tested in Q3 2024. Now let's do the math for an actual service call. A failed blower motor in a Bohn freezer means lost product. It means an emergency service visit at overtime rates. It means a follow-up trip to install the replacement and dispose of spoiled goods. That adds up to $500–$1,200 for a single failure. What the aftermarket tests don't tell you
Honestly, I'm not sure why some aftermarket motors pass a bench test and then fail in a real Bohn unit. My best guess is that the test conditions don't replicate the vibration profile of an actual walk-in cooler—or the temperature swings inside a Bohn freezer. The OEM motor is designed for that duty cycle. The aftermarket one is designed to cost less.
And there's another problem I've never fully understood: distributors who treat small orders like an afterthought. When I specify a genuine Bohn part for a small repair shop, I don't expect them to pay a huge premium. But some distributors tell those customers to buy a generic motor because it's cheaper. That's short-sighted. Today's $200 order is next month's $8,000 order—I've seen that happen more times than I can count.
What I'd do if I ran a small shop
My experience is based on about 200 mid-range orders a year, mostly walk-in coolers and freezers. If you're working on marine or ammonia systems, your experience may differ. But for standard Bohn commercial refrigeration equipment, here's what I'd do:
- Demand the spec sheet. If a motor isn't listed as a direct replacement for your Bohn evaporator model, ask for the shaft length, mount dimensions, and thermal protection rating. If they can't provide it, move on.
- Keep records. I made the rookie mistake in my first year of assuming a supplier's 'standard' motor would match the OEM spec. It cost us a redo. Now I log every part number and compare it against the original Bohn nomenclature.
- Price it right. The genuine Bohn motor isn't the cheapest up front, but it's the cheapest when you factor in callbacks and product loss. In maintenance, the total cost of ownership always matters more than the invoice.
Calling it: small customers deserve better
Some of my colleagues argue that small shops should take what they can get because they don't have volume pricing power. I understand the price pressure—I started out ordering two motors at a time. But the answer isn't to accept a part that's 0.03mm off and hope. The answer is to find a distributor who respects small orders.
As of January 2025, AHRI Standard 410 still sets the test conditions for evaporator unit coolers. Genuine Bohn parts are designed and tested to meet those conditions. I'm not saying every aftermarket motor fails. I'm saying that for a small business, the risk of failure is a bet you can't afford to take.
Small orders don't excuse low standards. And small customers deserve the same spec compliance as big boxes. If you're replacing a Bohn freezer blower motor, use the part that was engineered for the box. Your reputation—and your customer's inventory—depends on it.
