The Day I Thought I Was Saving Money
Back in September 2022, I was managing a medium-sized cold storage facility. We had four walk-in coolers running on Bohn equipment – two condensers outside, and evaporator coils inside each box. Everything was humming along fine until one of the Bohn evaporator coils started leaking.
Rush order. I needed a replacement fast. The OEM coil from Bohn was going to take two weeks and cost around $650. A third-party compatible coil was available same-day for $450. Seemed like a no-brainer, right? Not the smartest move.
Before I get to the fallout, let me set the scene. That same week, I had also been dealing with a few unrelated annoyances:
- Our office was too warm, so I had placed a tower fan near the HVAC return grille to help circulate air.
- The condenser fins were clogged with dust, so I grabbed a Dewalt leaf blower and blasted them clean. Actually worked pretty well.
- And I’d been meaning to replace the furnace filter in our office unit. I knew the general rule – which way to put air filter in furnace up or down – but I rushed it and put it in backwards. Figured it wouldn’t matter much.
Fast forward: I installed the cheap evaporator coil, fired up the system, and everything looked fine. For about three days. Then the new coil started frosting over, the walk-in temperature wouldn't drop below 45°F, and the compressor on the Bohn condenser was cycling erratically.
I called in a refrigeration tech. He took one look and said, “Your evaporator coil is starving. The airflow is wrong.”
The Real Culprits
Turned out three things worked together to kill that evaporator:
- The filter direction. That backwards furnace filter in the office? It restricted return air to the HVAC, which stole static pressure from the whole building’s duct system. The walk-in cooler shared an air plenum (don’t ask – old building design). Less airflow meant the evaporator didn’t get enough warm air to keep the coil above freezing.
- The tower fan placement. I had positioned the tower fan blowing away from the cooler’s condenser unit outside. That fan was actually pulling hot exhaust back toward the condenser coil inlet, raising head pressure.
- The Dewalt leaf blower. Great for cleaning condenser fins, but I had overdone it – bent a few fins and created a high-pressure drop. The condenser fan couldn’t move air effectively.
But the biggest issue? The cheap evaporator coil. It wasn’t designed for our specific refrigerant charge or ambient conditions. The Bohn OEM coil would have handled the airflow quirks better because its fin spacing matched the system. The generic coil? It was more sensitive to any imbalance.
The Total Cost (Read: Ouch)
Let me break down what that $450 “savings” really cost:
- New Bohn evaporator coil (rush shipped) – $780
- Service call + labor – $350
- Replacement refrigerant – $120
- Lost product (spoiled meat) – roughly $400
- Total extra: $1,650 – on top of the $450 I wasted on the cheap coil. So my “savings” turned into a $2,100 loss.
To be fair, the cheap coil looked fine on paper. But total cost of ownership includes reliability, compatibility, and the time you waste troubleshooting. I now calculate TCO before comparing any vendor quotes.
What I Learned (the Hard Way)
Three lessons that now live in our maintenance checklist:
- Stick with OEM for critical components. Bohn evaporator coils are engineered for specific conditions. Generic substitutions might save money upfront, but they’re a gamble.
- Airflow is everything. That includes filter direction (which way to put air filter in furnace up or down? The arrow points toward the blower – always check). And tower fans or leaf blowers can mess with system balance if used carelessly.
- Don’t let small fixes snowball. A $20 filter mistake cost me $1,200. A $50 tower fan placement cost me $400 in spoiled meat. And my Dewalt leaf blower? It’s still useful for condenser cleaning – but now I use a fin comb afterward.
Bottom line: I’ve stopped chasing the lowest price on refrigeration components. The Bohn equipment I replaced the cheap coil with has been running flawlessly for 18 months. That’s the real value – not the sticker price.
