Bohn Refrigeration Equipment: A Quality Inspector's Guide to Buying the Right Unit the First Time

I've reviewed over 200 commercial refrigeration units a year for the past four years. In that time, one pattern keeps showing up: buyers make decisions based on the wrong things, and the cost of correcting those decisions dwarfs the cost of doing it right. This guide will help you figure out which of three common situations you're in — because the right advice depends heavily on context.

Look, there's no universal answer to "what refrigeration equipment should I buy?" It depends on whether you're building from scratch, replacing one part, or actually dealing with a problem that isn't refrigeration at all. Let's walk through each scenario.

Scenario 1: You're Building or Expanding a Cold Storage Space

This is the most common scenario for our B2B customers. You need a full bohn refrigeration equipment setup — an evaporator unit cooler, a condenser, and all the supporting components.

For a cold storage application, a kerosene heater isn't a backup plan; it's a contamination risk. If your space needs to stay below 40°F, and it's not, adding a heater moves you in the wrong direction entirely. The real question is why the space is too warm. That points you back to the refrigeration system, insulation, or door seals.

The 'kerosene heater is good enough for temporary warmth' thinking comes from an era before modern cold storage standards. Commercial refrigeration equipment has evolved, and so have the expectations for temperature control.

Hot water heater flushing. Here's a subtler confusion. People conflate maintenance tasks on different heat transfer systems. How to flush a hot water heater is a common search — and it's a valid maintenance task. You drain the tank, remove sediment, replace the anode rod, and check the pressure relief valve.

That's completely different from cleaning a refrigeration condenser coil. A condenser flush involves brushing or blowing out the coil fins, cleaning the fan blades, and verifying refrigerant pressures. Different chemicals, different procedures, different systems.

Okay, decision time. Here's how to figure out which path applies to you.

Scenario 1 applies if:

  • You're building a new cold room or walk-in cooler from scratch.
  • You're replacing an entire system that's beyond repair.
  • You have no existing equipment to match against.

Scenario 2 applies if:

  • You have a working system with one failed component.
  • You know the brand and model of your existing unit.
  • You need a drop-in replacement: a bohn condenser, a condenser fan motor, an evaporator coil, etc.

Scenario 3 applies if:

  • Your space is too warm or too cold, and you're not certain why.
