In older buildings, the Bohn name is everywhere. On new projects, the same product families show up through Bohn refrigeration distributors and OEM catalogs.
That's the world I work in every day. I don't spec entire cold storage plants. I help people replace the right bohn freezer evaporator or bohn air cooled condenser—and ideally, only order it once.
1. How do I know if a Bohn evaporator is rated for a freezer?
Don't look at the brand. Look at the model and the nameplate. A true Bohn freezer evaporator is built for lower suction temperatures, heavier frost, and defrost cycles. The coil typically has wider fin spacing—often six or eight fins per inch—so ice doesn't bridge across the fins. The drain pan in a freezer-rated unit is heated, and the defrost type matters: electric, hot gas, or off-cycle for coolers.
When I started, I assumed every Bohn evaporator was just a coil with fans. In my first year, 2017, I ordered one by voltage and missed the defrost type completely. It came in with a 460V heater package for a 208V room. $1,800 order, a three-day delay, and a customer who learned to ask for someone else. Since then, the first question I ask every caller is simple: cooler or freezer?
2. What's the difference between a Bohn freezer evaporator and a Bohn air cooled condenser?
A freezer evaporator sits inside the box. It pulls heat out of the room and lets the refrigerant absorb it. A Bohn air cooled condenser sits outside and rejects that heat to the air. You need both sides working. I've taken more calls than I expected from people who replace the evaporator in a walk-in freezer but never check the condenser. Or they swap the condenser with a unit that looks similar and ignore the rating.
My most expensive condenser lesson came in September 2022. I matched a Bohn air cooled condenser by physical size only. Same cabinet, same fan layout, looked right. It was rated for a different ambient design. On the first 90°F afternoon, the head pressure was too high. $3,200 unit, one failed fix, and a six-week wait for the correct model. The dimensions don't tell you the heat rejection rating.
3. How do I read Bohn evaporator nomenclature?
The model number isn't random. I also don't remember every letter—or rather, I remember the ones I've looked up a hundred times. Bohn nomenclature usually includes the product family, coil style, capacity, voltage, and defrost type. The same letters can mean different things across model generations. So if someone claims to know every character from memory, be a little careful.
Do this instead:
- Take a photo of the nameplate before you call anyone.
- Write down the full model number, serial number, and voltage.
- Find the wiring diagram that matches the actual Bohn model, not the closest one.
Just telling someone to take a photo doesn't sound like a pro tip, but it's the checklist item that has caught more mistakes than any engineering rule. The photo also helps when the model number is faded. A colleague once read a faded plate as an 8 when it was a 3. That little difference changed the model. 4. How do I choose a Bohn air cooled condenser?
Use the required heat rejection, not the compressor horsepower. A condenser's rated capacity depends on saturated condensing temperature, ambient dry bulb, and design TD. AHRI Standard 420 ties unit cooler capacity ratings to specific entering air and refrigerant temperatures. AHRI Standard 460 does the same for remote air cooled condensers. The catalog table gives you the capacity at a stated TD. Find the row that matches your design ambient, then make sure the condenser can reject the total system heat—evaporator load plus compressor heat plus motor heat.
When I compared our Q1 and Q2 orders side by side one year—same refrigerant, different summer design temperatures—I finally understood why the same condenser wasn't the same. Don't learn that on a warm Friday afternoon.
5. Can I buy one Bohn evaporator if I'm a small customer?
Yes—and don't let anyone make you feel bad for asking. Some Bohn refrigeration distributors have a minimum order. That's their policy, not a rule of the universe. You should still be able to get a quote for one unit. If a salesperson treats a single evaporator order like a waste of time, find another source.
I was that small customer once. The vendors who took my $200 orders seriously are the ones I still call for $20,000 orders. Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means potential. I tell our newer staff the same thing when they cringe at quoting a single Bohn freezer evaporator for a small six-door freezer. That customer might be a big cold storage operator in three years. And even if they're not, a correct single-unit order doesn't cost extra. It just costs attention.
6. What should I do before I order a Bohn freezer evaporator replacement?
Get the application basics in writing:
- Box design temp: cooler or freezer?
- Defrost type: electric, hot gas, or off-cycle.
- Voltage and phase.
- Refrigerant type.
- Capacity required at the design temp, not just one for a 6x8 box.
- Photo of the old nameplate, and the wiring diagram if it still exists.
This list looks obvious. I created it after the third wrong-model quote in Q1 2024. Each one was a small thing—no voltage, no defrost, or a nameplate photo that was too blurry. Actually, one was the wrong model plate entirely. So now I ask for both the photo and the model number typed out. The cost of getting all six right on the first call is about ten minutes. The cost of one wrong order is a restocking fee, a delay, and a cold room.
7. Can I clean a Bohn air cooled condenser with a leaf blower?
Yes for loose leaves, no for embedded dirt. A Stihl leaf blower is what we keep on the service truck in fall. One of our techs prefers an EGO leaf blower for early morning calls because it's quieter than the gas model. Both work for clearing cottonwood, leaves, and dry dust off the fin face. But a leaf blower will not remove baked-on grease or dirt that's already driven into the fins.
For that, use a low-pressure coil cleaner and rinse with a gentle stream—not a pressure washer on full blast. Too much pressure bends the fins and pushes debris deeper into the core. After cleaning, straighten any bent fins with a comb. A bent fin on a Bohn air cooled condenser makes the coil look older than it is.
One more filter warning from a maintenance drawer I wish I could forget: a Can-Am air filter is made for a Can-Am vehicle, not for a refrigeration condenser. Engine filters and coil intake filters can look similar from across a room. They are not the same. Wrong filter means restricted airflow. Restricted airflow on a condenser means high head pressure. That's an expensive way to learn a filter doesn't fit.
8. What's the one piece of advice you'd give someone ordering Bohn equipment?
Trust the nameplate, not your memory. A Bohn freezer evaporator needs the right application, defrost, voltage, and capacity at your actual box temperature. A Bohn air cooled condenser needs to be selected on heat rejection at your design ambient, not on physical dimensions. And if your order is small, don't accept bad service as normal.
You might have landed here looking for a leaf blower or an air filter, too—that's fine. In refrigeration, the exact model numbers beat confidence every time.
